In Final Fantasy VII, Cloud is a mercenary and self-proclaimed ex-member of SOLDIER, a select, genetically augmented military unit operating under the defacto world government and megacorporation Shinra Electric Power Company. Fighting against Shinra in the resistance group "AVALANCHE" and driven by a feud with the primary antagonist, Sephiroth,Cloud learns to come to terms with his troubled past and adapts to his role as a leader. Cloud has also appeared in several other titles outside the Final Fantasy VII continuity. Such titles include Itadaki Street Special, Final Fantasy Tactics, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, Ehrgeiz, and the Kingdom Hearts series.
Cloud has garnered a primarily positive reception by critics. Described as "iconic," the character has been ranked highly in various published character lists. Cloud remains popular among fans, and continues to place highly in popularity polls. Cloud has also become the basis for a variety of merchandise, such as action figures and jewellery.
Squall Leonhart (スコール・レオンハート Sukōru Reonhāto ) is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy VIII, a role-playing game by Square (now Square Enix). He was designed by Tetsuya Nomura, with heavy influences coming from game director Yoshinori Kitase. Squall has appeared in several other games, such as the Kingdom Hearts series, where he appears under the name "Leon"; Chocobo Racing; and Itadaki Street Special. His weapon, the gunblade, also appears in other works.
In Final Fantasy VIII, Squall is a 17-year old student at Balamb Garden, a prestigious military academy for elite mercenaries known as "SeeDs".As the story progresses, Squall befriends Quistis Trepe, Zell Dincht, Selphie Tilmitt and Irvine Kinneas, and falls in love with Rinoa Heartilly. These relationships, combined with developments in the game's plot, gradually turn him from a loner to an open and caring person. Squall's Limit Break (special move) is Renzokuken, consisting of a series of gunblade slashes preceding a powerful finishing attack.
Tidus (ティーダ Tīda ) is a fictional character from the Final Fantasy series by Square Enix. He was first introduced as the protagonist from the console role-playing game Final Fantasy X in 2001. As the lead character, the player controls Tidus through the game, manipulating his actions through the unfolding storyline in traditional Final Fantasy style. Similar to the other characters in Final Fantasy X, Tidus' abilities are built around a classic Final Fantasy job class—in his case a Fighter, a balanced melee class.
In Final Fantasy X Tidus is introduced as a 17-year-old rising blitzball star player from Zanarkand. After a mysterious creature called "Sin" attacked his hometown, Tidus was seemingly transported to the world of Spira. Lost, confused, and feeling out of place, Tidus soon meets a newly fledged summoner, Yuna, and her guardians. The summoner is soon to set out on a pilgrimage in an attempt to put an end to the very creature that attacked Tidus' city, and by joining them, Tidus hopes he will find his way home. He has also made appearances in other video games, such as Final Fantasy X's sequel Final Fantasy X-2, the Kingdom Hearts series, and Dissidia: Final Fantasy.
The character was designed with the intention of having a cheerful appearance in contrast to previous Final Fantasy protagonists as well as to give him a deeper relationship with the player. Tidus has generally been well-received by video game reviewers. His personality and relationship with Yuna has been praised while there has been criticism focused on his voice work and outfit design. Several types of merchandise based on Tidus' character have been produced, such as action figures and jewelry.
Noctis Lucis Caelum (ノクティス・ルシス・チェラムNokutisu Rushisu Cheramu )The protagonist of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Noctis is the last heir to the Caelum Dynasty, which rules over the only remaining city-state that controls the Crystals. Noctis attempts to protect his city-state against those who seek to conquer it and take the Crystals by force. Nomura has compared Noctis's family to the modern-day Japanese mafia..The color of his eyes have been shown to change from blue to crimson during battle; according to Nomura, the color changes are both intentional and significant.Noctis's full name is Latin for "Light of the Night Sky," and his nickname is "Noct".Noctis wields many weapons, ranging from swords, spears, and lances to guns. He controls them with telekinesis (through the power of the Crystal), using them for both attack and defense. Nomura has stated that each weapon has a different usage and is not directly limited by normal standards of attack; for instance, some weapons are also usable as shields.Noctis also has the ability to teleport or to suddenly move at a high
speed, though it is unknown what role this skill will have in the actual gameplay.- Noctis's personality is different from other characters in the Final Fantasy franchise and is one that Nomura had wanted to try out for a long time.In the past, protagonists were not given strong personalities while distinctive ones were delegated to the supporting cast, but Nomura states that Noctis's idiosyncrasies mark a departure from this tradition. Although his character is said to be hard to define given his complexities, a good measure of his personality can be sensed from his first meeting with Stella. Noctis hides his shyness underneath a façade of coolness in front of her, which creates a cold and unsociable impression. However, he smiles and acts more openly around his friends, a testament to Nomura's statement that "[Noctis] is not the least bit a silent, gloomy little boy."
Zack Fair (ザックス・フェア Zakkusu Fea ) is a fictional character from the Final Fantasy series by Square Enix. He first appeared as a non-player character in the role-playing game Final Fantasy VII. In the story, Zack is a late member from the paramilitary organization SOLDIER developed by the megacorporation Shinra Electric Power Company. During the game, he is revealed to be Aerith Gainsborough's first boyfriend, as well as a friend of Cloud Strife. Zack ultimately dies protecting Cloud from Shinra's army after escaping from imprisonment and human experimentation. He is the second owner of the Buster Sword (バスターソード Basutā Sōdo ), and wielded it before Cloud. Zack also appears in the titles from Compilation of Final Fantasy VII—which are prequels and sequels from the original game— most notably in the prequel Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, where he acts as the protagonist.
Zack originally was not meant to appear in Final Fantasy VII, and was created by scenario writer Kazushige Nojima when he wanted to bring mysteries to the title. He was designed by Tetsuya Nomura and his name derived from "fair weather", to contrast with Cloud Strife's name. With Zack's conceptual backstory already written by Final Fantasy VII, the staff decided to use Compilation of Final Fantasy VII to expand his character. Zack is voiced by Kenichi Suzumura in Japanese and Rick Gomez in English. Suzumura was chosen specifically for his voice by Nomura, and was given the role without an audition. Western critics have praised Zack's character, commenting on his development since Final Fantasy VII, as well as his role within Crisis Core.
A member of the terrorist group AVALANCHE and owner of the 7th Heaven bar, Tifa is the childhood friend of Cloud Strife, the protagonist of Final Fantasy VII. Convincing him to join the group to keep him close and safe, she later assists him in saving the planet from the game's villain, Sephiroth. Elements of The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII later touched upon her character further, such as the film Advent Children in which she attempts to convince Cloud to let go of his self-imposed guilt and move on with his life after Sephiroth's defeat.
Named the pin-up girl of the "cyber generation" by The New York Times, Tifa has been compared to Lara Croft as an example of a strong, independent and attractive female character in video games. Sources such as IGN and UGO.com have both repeatedly praised both the character's appearance and strength as well as one of the best female characters in gaming, while Play named her the "most adored" of the Final Fantasy series' female characters. In 2007, Dengeki PlayStation named her the eighth best fictional character all time to appear in games for the Sony PlayStation.
Yuna (ユウナ Yūna ) is a fictional character in the Final Fantasy series. She is the female protagonist of Final Fantasy X and the main protagonist of the sequel Final Fantasy X-2. She was designed by Enzo and voiced by Hedy Burress and Mayuko Aoki in the English and Japanese versions, respectively. In Final Fantasy X, she is the daughter of the High Summoner Braska, and seeks to becoming a High Summoner herself, with the help of Wakka and Lulu. She eventually meets up with protagonist Tidus. Due to the fan reaction for Yuna, the developers sought to create Final Fantasy X-2, starring her.
She has received mixed reactions for her role in both Final Fantasy X and X-2. She ranked 10th on IGN's top 25 Final Fantasy characters list. After appearing in a conservative, long dress in Final Fantasy X, the designers changed her outfit to a more revealing one to reflect the more carefree world of Final Fantasy X-2. This was met with both praise and criticism. She has also appeared in the form of several different pieces of merchandise, including a CD entitled "Final Fantasy X-2 Vocal Collections", featuring songs performed by Mayuko Aoki.
Stella Nox Fleuret (ステラ・ノックス・フルーレ Sutera Nokkusu Furūre
A young woman with golden-blonde hair, Stella is said to be the daughter of the Fleuret family of the country Tenebrae (Latin for "darkness")[20][26] and an enemy to Noctis, though her allegiances are under suspicion.[citation needed] Fleuret is the French name of the fencing foil, a direct reference to Stella's weapon of choice, a rapier. Like Noctis, she is able to materialize weapons from thin air, as she is shown summoning her rapier from a rune similar to one used by Noctis to summon his sword, though Stella's rune is golden while Noctis's is blue.Like that of Noctis, a good measure of Stella's personality can be sensed during her first meeting with Noctis. For instance, in their discussion about the power they share and its connection to an old legend,Stella is very open about the matter while Noctis seems reluctant to talk about it, suggesting that they keep it a secret Stella is described to be ladylike and extremely politebut direct in her manner — a reflection of her proper but strong upbringing. She acts according to her beliefs, and doesn't shy away from problems. Nomura states that she will be the first to stand out from other female characters in the Final Fantasy franchise, although it is not specified how.
Aerith Gainsborough (エアリス・ゲインズブール Earisu Geinzubūru ) — spelled Aeris Gainsborough in the English releases of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy Tactics — is a player character in Square's (now Square Enix) console role-playing game Final Fantasy VII. She was designed by Tetsuya Nomura with influence from Yoshinori Kitase, Hironobu Sakaguchi and Yoshitaka Amano.

As the story progresses, AVALANCHE begin to pursue the antagonist Sephiroth, and the player learns that Aeris is a Cetra, or "Ancient", one of the planet's oldest races.
